What is Wapuu?

If you’re new to WordPress or WordCamps, you’ve probably seen this friendly little creature before. Wapuu is the mascot of the global WordPress community.

The very first Wapuu was created in Japan back in 2009 as a fun way to represent WordPress. Since then, local communities around the world have designed their own versions to reflect their cities and cultures. Each one tells a story about its people, from mountain-loving Wapuus in Nepal to the cheerful Wapuu Da from Kolkata.

For WordCamp Dhaka 2025, we’re proud to welcome our own unique version to the family: Dhakapuu.

About the Creator

Dhakapuu was designed by Joe A. Simpson Jr., a passionate designer and long-time WordPress contributor. Joe is well known for bringing local culture and personality into his Wapuu creations for WordCamps all over the globe.

In his own words, Joe shared his excitement about returning to South Asia for another creative project, calling Dhakapuu “a vibrant visual concept inspired by the city of joy.” He aimed to capture the energy, warmth, and motion of Dhaka through design, and the result truly speaks for itself.

The Inspiration Behind Dhakapuu

Dhakapuu draws its inspiration from Dhaka’s daily rhythm, the colorful streets, the buzz of rickshaws, and the joyful chaos that defines our city. Rickshaws, one of the most iconic symbols of Dhaka, play a central role in the design. They represent movement, connection, and the spirit of everyday life in Bangladesh.

Joe also incorporated positive colors and WordCamp Dhaka’s brand elements to create a sense of harmony between the event’s identity and the city’s lively personality.

Every shade and line in Dhakapuu reflects Dhaka’s unique pulse: bold, friendly, and full of life.

A Celebration of Culture and Community

More than just a mascot, Dhakapuu is a celebration of our community and culture. Wapuu has always been a global WordPress symbol, but each local version tells its own story. From Tokyo to Kathmandu, Kolkata to Johor Bahru, every Wapuu reflects the culture of its community. Dhakapuu proudly carries that tradition forward for Bangladesh.

For us, Dhakapuu represents the heart of WordCamp Dhaka where developers, designers, bloggers, and tech enthusiasts come together to share ideas, build connections, and celebrate the open-source spirit.
